The Vacation Test
What my business needed
Long time no see…
I know it’s been a bit since I last wrote one of these, a lot has been going on. I’ll catch you up to speed.
The Vacation Test:
This last 1.5 weeks have been some of the busiest all year. Normally summer is slow for agencies and small businesses, but luckily this year was an outlier.
A few months ago I booked a vacation to Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Montenegro.
Montenegro 🇲🇪
And like any business owner I was a little hesitant about going on vacation.
“What if there’s an emergency?”
“What if my team needs me?”
“Will me not working for a week destroy revenue 2 weeks later?”
Usually I don’t take vacations for these reasons. Even on vacation I make sure to work as close to my normal workday as possible.
This vacation was wildly different and not by choice.
On my second day of vacation we had our biggest sales day to date. Our normal monthly quota of clients was closed all in one day…
All day long it was like people I talked to months ago were hitting me up, ready to move forward.
The very next day after this historic sales day we were going to a different country. So we packed up our things and hit the road. Once we got to our new Airbnb things were not as they seemed.
The wifi: non existent, according to the host, it would be fixed in the next few days.
Cellular: 1 bar of service
We were going to be staying here for 5 days. I’d have zero ability to work and check in with my team on the progress of all those clients we signed the previous day.
I’d normally just go into town to use the free wifi but we were miles from the nearest town and our hotspots were not working.
With the 1 bar of service I had, I sent out a slack message that read something along the lines of “DEFCON 1 - I have zero wifi or cell for next few days. I will check in when possible.”
I felt pretty silly, this apartment was a little bit too good to be true when I booked it. But I couldn’t really do much except wait and write content in my notes app.
Fast forward 3 days and the wifi is magically fixed.
I login expecting a few things I need to fix and save face on and…
Nothing…
Everything is going fantastic and the team is ahead of schedule.
Like I never even left.
This is the power of a team. And it wouldn’t be possible without outsourced talent.
If I didn’t take the time to learn how to find, recruit train, and build a remote team I wouldn’t have been able to make it through this set back unscathed.
